Hey Guys,

A question... as some of you may/may not know I am moving Jags to my own private yard at my OH's dads home... and I'm VERY excited...

HOWEVER thinking practically I have a few questions...

How do you get rid of your muck?

I am looking to remove on a weekly basis and plan to put either into big builders sacks or straight onto a trailer...

SO .... where can I get rid of it? I for some reason think that the local 'tip' won't take it?

Should I contact local farmers/farm shops/nursery's?

HELP ME!! LOL!

P.S - It's straw. x

We get our taken away by a local farmer (well, neighbour!) and they charge us for each trailerload. Moving it each week is going to be incredibly laborious, is it essential to do that? We have a three-sided enclosure for ours and keep it neat, could you not do that?

Many moons ago, my YO used to burn it off....but i don't think you're allowed to do that anymore

Could you bag up the poo and advertise it in a free local paper for all the Alan Titchmarshes of the South? I would personally go for rubber matting and shavings - I find the poo is easier to pick out and isolate lol and then get the wet out once a week. But then shavings take longer to rot!

I would ask your local farmers to see if they are willing to take it?

We sometimes get the farmer to come and collected but its normally about once a year when it had decomposed a bit.

[/ QUOTE ]Hmmm - it needs to be more regular than that!!

[/ QUOTE ]LOL - I could but it would mean that people knew a horse was at the property - which TBH I would rather people not know!!! Safety and all that!!

A local farmer comes and takes ours about once a fortnight. He charges per load. You would get away with having it collected a lot less often.

[/ QUOTE ]Hmm will get dad on the case... being a retired farmer himself he knows a few in the area!!

Putting muck into a trailer may in time rot the trailer - it is pretty acidic stuff. Also, once it gets high it may be hard to actually get the muck into it. Probably the best thing for you to do is ring round some local farmers and ask if they have anywhere you can dump it. Farmers and gardeners like rotted manure, fresh stuff is not much use to them.

Unfortunately, gardeners don't usually want it until it has rotted down for about a year first - well the longer the better really.

We advertised our muck 'free to a good home' and gardeners come and fetch it regularly. It does help that my field backs onto the allotments, they don't seem to mind how old the manure is.

Don't really want to invite people onto OH's dads property TBH, it's quite well hidden and not obvious unless you know it's there!!

Could you not move the muck further away so OH's dad doesn't have to see it. You said you will be putting it in a trailer. Perhaps you could then empty the trailer elsewhere, out of sight from the house. when it is reasonably well rotted it could be spread on your fields, I'm sure you could get a local contractor/farmer to do this for you.

I have always found farmers to be more approachable when bribed with a bottle of whiskey and a flutter of the eyelashes!!

Buy an old tipping agricultural trailer and get a local farmer to remove it and empty it when it is full. Mine has lasted for over 10 years with the same floor.
