Muck heaps ???

What do people do when they have hay mixed in with the muck? I started bagging the ponies fresh stuff up a few months ago, straight from the field so it was just poo. Left it by our gates and it always gets taken quickly so that's great. But I had a stable built before Xmas and in an attempt to preserve our field I'm now feeding all hay inside the stable. They are not shut in but they choose to poo inside and then paddle their poo through the hay that drops on the floor. So now when I muck out it is about 60% poo and 40% hay. I'm not sure if the hay is desirable to gardeners...I'm thinking not so much??

Anyone else have this problem and what do you do??

I used to just burn our muckheaps. Fire is generally free lol

It is illegal to burn muckheaps, and you will get fined lots of money if you get caught doing just that. It is also very anti-social, it really doesn't smell good and having been on the receiving end of someone burning their muckheap on a regular basis, I can vouch that having to spend the summer with all windows closed and unable to dry washing, it is really not pleasant. Yes, that was dealt with by the Environment agency in the end as it was covering a whole town in retched smoke.

Thankyou all xx looks like we will have to suck it up and pay the £150 :( ( that's expensive poop that is ) knew I should have bought a rocking horse !

Kat2290 - If you build a heap and let it rot down a bit beore bagging then the hay should degrade. There is a bit of hay mixed in with mine, but it seems to rot down no problem and I've had no complaints yet!

Er, we burn ours off and whatever remains a local farmer who we buy hay off takes it for free. We've had it removed once in the last 4 years.

Our poo pick pile (so just poo, nothing else) is separate and we've contacted local allotment groups and put notices up on their boards for free manure. They come and pick it up, last week a guy took a trailer load and he's coming back to get more :)
