Muck stains?

Any ideas? My new mare has muck stains, basically caked on muck(poop) thats been there a long time, all down the inside of her legs, on her knees and a bit on her face. Plus her tail has dreadlocks in, which feel like twigs, you can't bend them as they are so caked on. Gave her tail a quick wash tonight, just the bottom, no higher than the dock. And got a lot of muck out, but couldn't shift the dreadlocks. Also gave her legs a whipe, but the dirt won't shift... Its too hard to brush as its stuck on fast. Am wary of washing her too fully as she's only a baby, and although is very well behaved I don't want to push my luck.
Any ideas, I'd like to get it off to prevent it getting worse or causing discomfort...

Wash her tail again then douse in human hair conditioner - Supermarket own brand is perfect - quantity is needed!!!

Sponge her legs in warm water - my filly adores her baths, strange creature.
 
Could you trim the very bottom of her tail to free up the end of the dreadlocks then give it another wash in warm water. I would fill a bucket (warm water) and hold the bottom in it for a while and then give a good scrub with shampoo.

This might sound a bit odd but for shows I rinse my boys tail in fabric softener. It works wonders, detangles and shines. Just use a cap full and make sure you just put it on the ends, stay well away from the dock.

For her legs I would just go with everyone else and say sponge with warm water. Once she is used to the sponge I would go in for the kill with shampoo and warm water and gently dry them down with a towel. It might be good for her, get her used to baths and she will love them for ever more!

Oh, one last thing, I wouldn't bother with the dry shampoos you can get. I have used them and they aren't great, don't really bring the dirt off and are quite messy.

Time she learned about washing! My weanlings got a dose of the squits due to a new lot of haylage being a bit too rich. They've been bunged in the wash-box, two at a time, and had tails, legs and bottoms thoroughly washed, legs and bums slathered in udder cream to stop any soreness if the runniness persists for a few more days, and plenty of tail conditioner added to help 'shed' muck. They didn't mind too much! Sooner they learn, the better.
