I've been using a Terra Vac colt for almost 4 years and think the machine is such a time and back saver on the farm. However, I've been
having problems with the hoses. They seem to disintegrate within a
very short time. We always wash the hoses after use. Twice a week for
about 6 months of the year is the extent of time the machine is used.
Is there anyone out there with the same complaint? And if so, where
do you go for replacement hoses? We had gone to the manufacturer 3
years ago, but the experience was fraught with problems. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Not really. We went back to Terra Vac, years ago, and they ordered a hose for us (they wouldn't tell us the supplier they used). That one perished within a month or so. I did find another supplier (can't remember the name), and that hose perished. My husband and I now believe that the handyman we employed for 16 years was the culprit. He was a sociopath and stole, hid and/or destroyed dozens and dozens of our personal possessions, machines and tools. Since he's been gone (2 years now) nothing has gone missing or been destroyed. The Terra Vac is too large for me to handle, so it's now for sale.

Are you looking for a hose supplier?

I've had some luck, I found a hose distributor and bought 10metres at trade price (£20 per metre) so now we have enough coming to put a new short hose on and make a wander hose aswell (as the machine didn't come with one) and have enough spare to replace the short hose if it gets damaged :)

The place is ADT and the hose spec is EOLO L PVC Vacuum 203mm

I guess you won't need it now but if ever you come across anyone with a need, you can tell them!

Incidentally, do you think horsey people would be interested in having their paddocks hoovered, I thought about setting my lad on with the a tractor and the machine if people would pay a small fee.... if so how much do think would be a reasonable rate to charge?

Hi 4candles, Thank you so very much for the information re: hose for Terra Vac. The price you paid is practically free compared with the prices I paid for hosing in the past. I will mention it to anyone in need.

I think your idea to have your son paddock cleaning is excellent. Obviously, the paddocks would have to be within a very reasonable distance from your place, unless you have a large enough trailer to transport your tractor and Terra Vac further afield. Ideally, if someone were to contract your son to clean their fields, it would have to be on a very regular basis. For me, we poo pick daily. If your son can make a steady job of it, I think it could be a winner. I used to have my fields cleaned twice a week with the machine. I would have preferred more often, but that would have to be something your boy would work out with field owners. If I didn't have a helper to do my fields everyday, I would definitely go the route of a contract poo picker. But, it would have to be a committed, ongoing job, like any business.

Good luck and thank you, again.

Sorry, I forgot to mention a possible fee. You would have to decide whether to charge by the hour, the acreage or the fuel costs together with the wear and tear on your machinery and the reasonable hourly wage for your son. The question of where to dispose of the manure would, of course, be relevant only to the owner of the fields. Hope this helps.
