my pony had a small amount of mucus in one nostril yesterday, then coughed three times out hacking. should i worry?

he lives out 24/7, has no hay yet, feed is always damped. he's 13 yrs and otherwise healthy.

i would just keep an eye on him, otherwise he might just feel under the weather. make sure you dont spot him lying down an awful lot in the field as a pony down the yard had all of this but very bad. she had to stay in for about 5days then was let out once her nose was cleared from mucus and her coughing had stopped and she regained some energy as she was completly drained, however no drugs were needed just some pure tlc

firstly take temperature. thats first sign of illness

if there is alot of snot on floor in morning. isolate the horse as could be strangles. (keep a check under throat for any lumps or abcesses)

sorry but its best to be aware for worst case scenario

mine had this 2 weeks ago - called vet and they gave us some antibiotics - was only mild infection as white mucus not yellow or green - if yellow/green get a vet. take temp - as long as below 39 you ok
if above get vet
- i used benylin as told by vet - chesty coughs non drowsy - dont tell pharmacist for horse they wont sell it to you.
i now steam her hay - she also lives out 24/7
took 2 weeks to run its course dont ride if coughing as too much strain on lungs -

Keep an eye on it as if the pony has started coughing for the first time (or the first time this winter) then it could be a mild COPD/RAO associated with bedding, dusty stable etc etc.
