I haven't tried it yet but apparently baby oil is good, though I've been advised to start putting things on now so it has time to sink into the skin before the mud starts
I used pig oil last year, just sponged a bit on below his knees a couple of times a week and it worked fantastically well. mud just didn't stick to him. Word of warning though, do a patch test to check it doesn't irritate his skin, some horses are sensitive to it although my TB was fine.
i have had horse for over 30 yrs, and in that time i have tried every cream lotion and powder on the market, but i always go back to my own made up lotion. it works. go to the supermarket and buy there own brand of baby oil. place this in a spray bottle and add 20 drops of lavender oil. spray the legs every day before turning the horse out. the oil prevents any mud reaching the skin, but does not prevent the skin from breathing, which some other oils and creams can do. the lavender is a fantastic antibacterial and healing oil, so if they do get a tiny scrape or cut the lavender oil will kill any bacteria that might cause a problem. i have used this on every shape, size, breed and type of horse, and it has never failed me. good luck
Thanks everyone for your help.
He has got very sensitive skin so I'll probably try the Baby Oil & Lavender spray combined with the MFP or Mud Shield Powder (need tor ead up on both) for when we are working in the sand school (the sand seems to rub his skin quite a bit)
my mare is a chestnut warmblood with very sensitive skin. i would not use anything else if your going to try the baby oil and lavender. somethings can react with each other. the above is a natural remedy and the others have chemicals in them so make sure that you wash legs in between if your going to try different products. also my mare gets a reaction to the sand so i bandage her to keep the sand away. cant use boots as the sand gets inside them. hope this all helps
