Mud control mats

This is my turn out pen made with 3 pallets of mud control mats. The boards are to keep haynets off the electric fence!

I have quite a few! (I think one big pallet and one small pallet). They were great to create a turnout area for our barefoot laminitic pony and I have also used them to create a haylage feeding area for another barefoot horse of ours who absolutely trashes the field. However, t is difficult to keep a permanent topping of sand on them if you are on even a slight slope, and they can be slippery for shod horses without a topping. And if you want to feed forage on them then you don't want to use sand. So there are pros and cons.

They are easier to lay when the land is just slightly wet when it is easier to level the ground, but I have put them down in atrocious conditions and they still did the job although the edge ones did move as the horses stepped on to them (this was on a slight slope and a very wet area of ground). I now secure the edge mats with the plastic pegs used to secure weed membrane (from Amazon) and that works a treat to stop them moving. Whilst they don't sink, they do soon build up a layer of droppings and mud on them, so you do need to scrape them regularly to stop them being buried.

So my verdict is they are definitely a game changer, but they are perhaps not quite as miraculous as they appear at first glance!

I added another 23 to a friend's collection last weekend in calf-deep sloppy mud. Once laid they really didn't budge more than a few millimetres.

Could you expand on the rules please - either here or PM as I'm looking at getting some this year.

What size is this?

I've got a pallet ready to lay over the xmas break and I'm so hoping they make mine and the horses lives a bit easier.
Laying them may make you swear and or cry … once they are down they are a little island of bliss

Top tip. Do not think you can put them together like a jigsaw… work out the area you want to put them in and do a row at a time then build the next row (not attached to the first row) and slide the whole row into the first… otherwise you may well get in a whole heap of pain

Thank you so much for this! I'll let you know how I get on. I literally can't wait x
