So, Thumper is having Proflavin applied to his legs daily, and they are getting better.

Do people think that if I gently massaged them with baby oil as well tonight it would help release the remaining scabs - or should I not mix???

Had been thinking about the cling film thing - but vet really does not want him bandaged.

Personally, I'd just stick with using the proflavin and try to pick off the scabs whilst you're applying it.

Is proflavin prescription only?

Be a bit cautious with Baby Oil as it can burn on sensitive skin and it will lock in moisture.

Over the years when i have had to deal with mud fever i have found it is better to apply creams every other day and also allow the skin to breath.

I agree with your vet try not to bandage if possible and if the skin is healing i wouldn't start using anything else on him

My concern with the baby oil would be that it would be hard to get back out of his coat if you see what I mean? One the legs were a bit oily there would be potential for dust and dirt to stick.

My old grey got what looked like mud fever in the summer, turned out to be a photosensitivity reaction. We were told to treat it like mud fever and I found that bathing with a warm solution of diluted Hibiscrub helped to loosen the scabs.

Haven't read your other post so apologies if I sound like I'm teaching you to suck eggs!

Not sure if I'm honest - but it came from my vet.

Not at all. This really is a first for me.

Ok folks - no baby oil.

Thanks for your input.

I've always had success with zinc & castor oil cream to lift scabs caused by mud fever but I have never used proflavin to know if the two should be mixed or not.

Did you get antibiotics from your vet to help clear it up aswell?

I cant remember for the life of me what they are called, but i got a weeks worth for Archie last year as he had a small bit of mudfever that wouldnt go away and it cleared up within 2 days and hasnt been back since.

Also do you have thermatex leg wraps? Great for drying legs properly if they get wet when hes turned out or if you have to wash them for any reason. x
