My warmblood is going through the usual bout of mud fever which we have every year. I have tried every lotion and potion going but this year it is a better bout of it. When he comes out of his box in the morning his hind legs are always a bit puffy (even without mud fever) but now his sheath is swelling. I have the vet coming out later to see him as concerned over infection etc. I have read that mud fever and lymphangitis can be linked - has anyone had this? He is 16 now and with exercise normally the swelling disappears. I have walked him out this morning and the swelling in the sheath did decrease quite a bit but not fully. His hind legs however returned to normal. He is in fine spirits and not presenting feeling ill to me - believe me when he is feeling rough he tells you! Any thoughts or experiences would be great.

If you're picking off the scabs then you are providing entry for bacteria. Best just to soak and not pick. Bacterial infection can lead to lymphangitis - an infection of the lymphatic system.

The swelling may be unrelated. At his age many horses have puffy fetlocks from being in overnight. 24 hour turn out is much healthier for the older horse - but not always possible, I know.

Try rugging him warm and putting him out 24/7. Use a healing cream to treat the existing scabs which you should allow to drop off naturally. If swelling does not subside after 2 days he will need a course of antibiotics to tackle the infection so you'll need vet intervention. I would avoid steroids however as they can exacerbate the condition in the long run. Hope this helps.
