Mud fever is back again - I'm sooooo sick of it. She had it on all four, but I got them clean quite quickly with the exception of one foreleg which took weeks and weeks for me to eradicate it. Now, it's back as bad as it was, just that foreleg again. The skin is pink and healthy (not red raw) and there don't seem to be any scabs or yellow exudate as we had before, but still there is now this huge bare patch of tender skin exposed as the hair has come away.. I'm using flamazine again, but seriously concerned that this is how it's going to be until summer. Where have I gone wrong?

Doesnt sound like you have gone wrong particuarly atall. You will just have to keep your horse out of the mud/fields completely is all I can suggest. Your horse is obviously very susceptable(sp) to it as is one on our yard, vet has been to him today. Advice was just keep dry and clean, away from mud. Hes got to have some anti-biotics, Flamazene and a pain killer as his leg has swelled up and now turned to cellulitis. Awful condition. Hope yours gets well soon.

Thanks Izz. At least there isn't any swelling or lameness. That must be a nightmare I'm sure. Just hope I can get on top of it fast so she doesn't have to be kepy away from the fields for long as she really loves going out too! Never easy is it. Again thanks.

We have one that gets it really badly - whatever we do. He's just one of those horses. We have to keep him in for most of the winter unfortunately. He just goes in a turnout paddock that is hardcore underneath, and we let him have a blast in the big (muddy) fields once a week - he seems to be able to cope with that. He loves going out too, but for his health he can't so much.

OP Just re read your post again, and that pink skin is part of the healing process after a bad attack - the scabs fall off, along with the hair, and the skin renews, then finally the hair grows back. So no need to put anything on this - its not bad skin. Let the air get to it, and keep the legs as dry as you can. If it starts again, the filling is usually the first sign - so I watch our mud rash wuss for the slightest sign of swelling...
