is my first winter with new horsey and have been told she gets mud fever on back white socks - theres a tiny patch but nothing bad. how do i treat it as winter gets going? is there a good barrier cream or do i leave it be - is it better to wash and dry legs every day? can anyone recommend any treatment creams?

erm, my friend uses sudocrem, the baby bum cream haha

it does work!

You can find loads of helpful info if you just google mud fever... seems mud fever can be slight up to really bad and needing antibiotics.. makes for a good read..

two camps on this one
Wash and dry legs and treat them or
Leave legs muddy and let dry naturally and then brush out

I chose option 2 on vet advice as when I got Pidge end of May he had a big lump of mud fever on his hind leg. Touch wood 4 years later he's never had a hint of mud fever and he has 3 very white legs! I just leave mud to dry and then brush off, he has his legs washed say 2 or 3 times max over the winter if that.

Flint gets it very badly, he has been lame from it before.

I had the vet out last time. He has told me to clip all hair from legs, hibiscrub, leave to dry and then apply the cream he gave me. . . He gave me a cream i think called flamazine, which has steroids in it, and another barrier cream.

He gets it on all four legs, he wears boots out in the field, and if the ground is very wet/muddy he stays in.

The treatment fromt the vet worked wonders, and i will be doing that again this year.

Hope you find something

barrier cream good old udder cream if she does get mud fever clean with hibi scrub and then apply flamazine cream. The best thing is try your hardest to keep it clean and dry maybe some turn out socks!

My mare gets it in summer off the dew, never bothers her in Winter! Always just on one white sock too.
Had to have the vet this year as got very painful, he gave me Fuciderm which made it worse. I mixed Flowers of Sulphur (natural antifungal/antiseptic) into Sudocrem and it has cleared up lovely now. Will keep putting it on a s a barrier though just in case it opens up again.
