My mare has gotten a bit of mud fever on her heels. Not bad, just a couple of scabs on each leg - I guess the damp weather hasn't helped her pink skin.

Never had it before though and I just wondered the best way to deal with it. My old horse had it years ago and I was advised to pick the scabs off then put a suitable barrier cream on. Does this still stand? Only I was busy soaking the scabs off last night when another livery informed me it's not the done thing to pick scabs off and I had to put some special cream on which would lift the scabs.

Anyone shed any light on this? What would the special cream be... and what's your method to deal with mud fever.

Thank-you

Mine has it at the moment :( I'm hibbiscrubbing and then putting sudocrem on it which seems to be the best way I have found. I dont pull the scabs off as such but some do come off during washing and putting the cream on.

Get yourself some udder salve (not cream) op - and smother that on.

Don't wash with hibbiscrub, just let the udder salve do it's work.

For straight forward mud fever, vets advised Sudocreme still. Go easy on the hibiscrub as it can inflame sensitive skin if used too frequently. Sudocreme is good as its a sunblock, as photosensitivity seems to add to the problem on pink skinned legs. My mare only gets it in summer, she's totally clear during the winter months.

I too avoid hibiscrub, they seem to find it quit abrasive, and I don't particuarlaly like being kicked in the head! If you find you can't get the scabs off with plenty of cream, try cream then wrapping with cling film, it helps lift them off! I am currently washing with tea tree, drying and using a flamozine (sp) cream with intrasite plus other vet ingredients!
