Hi all my thoroughbred came in lame on the front right leg the other day farrier thought it was bruising and said bute him twice a day and it should right itself he also said he looked slightly off on his left hind as I was leading him away and yesterday I was checking his legs and on the left hind he has a few mud fever type scabs and his hairs coming away and the leg was abit swollen he has been lame before even from mild mud fever but not in the spring? It's been very dry up here for weeks only had rain one night and I brought him in, anyone else had mud fever in summer? I can't see it being mites as I thought it was only feathery types that got them unless someone wants to prove me wrong?
FYI I am getting the vet next week Tia

Mud fever type scabs may well be photo sensitivity .
Do you have buttercups in your field as this can cause it on their lower legs and muzzles.
Using a good sunscreen can help or using turnout boots...

Have you got buttercups, my old horse hot really bad mud fever at this time of year which we think was caused by sensitivity to buttercups, contact dermatitis started it.
