Has anyone had this before, my mare keeps getting these scabs forming on her knees and at the side of her knee, I clear them up and then they come again, i've not seen mudfever in this region before so not sure if that's what it is but have had horses with mudfever before and these look exactly the same type of scab - would you treat them the same ? thanks :)

Mason had some similar scabs, in a similar place, I think it was because he was scratching/biting them as they were itchy, coupled with the fact that he was stamping as well, we put it down to mites.
A couple of dectomax injections and some frontline later, *fingers crossed* we've solved the problem. I intend to use pig oil/sulfur or sulfur on it's own when it's dry to keep them away in the future.
Theresa_F emailed me a great pm about keeping hairy horses legs free of mites - I know your horse isn't a hairy, but I would guess that some of the advice holds true - if you're interested let me know and I can forward it onto you.
good luck

That pm forwarded would be handy thanks.

She isn't scratching them though, to be honest she can't even reach them as she's humoungously pregnant and can't even get round to her knees.

I hadn't even thought of mites, something I must look into - thanks for the suggestions.

My mare has two identical scabs on the outer side of her hocks just like yours. She isnt the most graceful of mares when it comes to getting up or down for a roll and she has done hers on the hard ground. Perhaps yours is the same.
I couldnt imagine it to be mud fever as it has been reletivly dry recently and is normally found lower down.

Yes thats a possibility too - she is probably hitting the ground quite hard due to her size at the moment and may be scuffing around trying to get up too - she did have them a few weeks back too but they went down then have come up again - maybe like you say as the ground is so hard. Thankyou.

Do you mean hocks?

If so, my horse gets these rubs from time to time where he stands too close to/leans on the back wall of his stable, and also rubs them when he lies down.

My lad has exactly the same thing-combination of itchiness (possibly mites) and rubbing them when getting up. There are more, not less, even though I have used Wondergel etc. I got the vet out yesterday for a Dectomax-doubt yours would do that for a pregnant mare? It's the same effect as Ivermectin.

She also advised me to wash his legs with ph neutral soap like Simple to get rid of the scabs. I did that today and rinsed really thoroughly. I think he has very sensitive thin skin, possibly allergic to pig oil and sulphur as it seemed to make it worse.

Could it be Mallanders or sallanders (sp?) - one is on hocks and one is on knees, can't remember which though.

MJ has them behind his knees, always has, all year round, although worse in winter.
At his 5 stage vetting, the vet called it 'greasy knee', and recommended washing with hibiscrub a couple of times a week, and then using E45 or a barrier cream.
I found this helps, but it never really goes

He's not itchy there at all.
