Hi all

so.... new yard has a lot of good points - really nice brick stables in an old-fashioned square yard, good people, superb hacking- but... the land is lousy - I've never seen clay like it. Bride came in this evening with grey clay up to her knees that you could cast pretty sturdy pots out of.

so now I'm worried about mud fever which has never before been an issue.

has anyone got any good prophylactic tips to keep it at bay till the land dries out?

thanks

E

PIg oil mixed with flowers of sulphur makes a protective leg dressing and is very economical, lasts for days.

Robinsons own product is really good, used to be called 'prevent it' but it's named something else now. It's an oil put it on before you turn out, I find every second/third day is enough to keep the skin in good condition.

NAF has a suppliment called mud guard that you put into their feed to help prevent mud fever, and I have seen the results of this suppliment, very good IMO. I would also either use sudocreme or heal to hoof cream to act as a barrier, so that the mud can't get to the skin in the first place. Hope this helps!

Check if any of the other horses that have been at the yard have had it, if they never have then the bacteria probably isnt there (as it lives in the ground) so you'll have nothing to worry about.
