mud fever scabs all year round

My boy has mud fever type scabs all year round on one of his legs. His leg always regularly swells up when he's standing in the stable. It's managed by 24/7 turnout but I am thinking ahead to winter.

His leg has gotten scabby already, I think from where it has been wet/dry/wet/dry with the weather. Does anyone else have a horse who has a scabby leg all year round?

Is it his white leg? Could be photosensitivity if that is the case.

Yes I do, back of pasterns on white legs. It is the sun on my lad. He also has a white sock on a front but that is not affected as it is in the shade of his belly.

I use cow salve to soften the scabs and then protect the area.

it is a white leg yes interesting. He gets mud fever-type scabs on his heels and has one already

Ask your Vet about Leukocytoclastic Vasculitis. This often is mistaken for mud fever.

I agree with this. I thought mine had mudfever for a prolonged period but it turned out to be this. There is another recent thread on here about LV if you want to look into it further.

My Draft mare has had scabs on her legs all the time I have had her and has the scars to prove that she has had them for years before that. I have recently cut all wheat out of her diet and the scabs are reducing every day. Less than one week after she last had a small amount of wheat (treats with wheat as one ingredient), the remaining scabs are tiny and she is not itching at all.
