Out of interest I'd like to know what the incidence of mud fever is in turned out horses and stabled horses as it seems a lot of stabled horses have it..... I find it odd since in my 12 years of owning 11 horses and them living out 24/7, only 1 of mine has ever showed signs of it (and even then only lightly).

I had a mare that was stabled 24/7 in the winter and she got mud fever every year, she then went lame and got turned out for a winter in a field that used to get a bit flooded and never got mud fever once. I put it down to the arena having some sort of bacteria in it that reacted to her.

Stabled at night, out during day (except alisha on box rest at moment, but usually in night, out day!) Neither of them have had mud fever

Here, we have about 15 out in the fields 24/7, not ridden. About 25 in work, turnout every few days at the least.
3 turned out, in at night.
Have had a few with bits of mud fever, nothing serious - all were in the mainly stabled category.

Chex gets it all year, he's out 24/7 and stabled over night in winter. Drives me mad, it seems to clear up then its back again within the week!!

My two are out during the day and in at night. One had slight MF, the other hasn't had it. They are in the same field for the same length of time. Ironically, the one who got MF has black legs, and the one with white pasterns has been MF-free.

So obviously susceptibility to MF is an individual thing to do with the horse's skin, apart from the conditions of turnout.

Also environmental factors. This year has been especially bad at our yard, which I put down to the mild, wet weather. Obviously wet=muddy, but warm conditions allow the micro-organism to flourish.

out 24/7 and has only had mud fever once - the only time we clipped her legs. we leave them on now and there is no problem.

same here !!

Mine are out 24/7 and the field is very muddy but none of them have mud fever.

DieselDog we had the same problem with an arena giving them all mud fever. It has since had a new surface and I don't think anything out of the 40 plus horses at the yard has mud fever this year.

stabled at night, got mud fever this year first time ever. am wondering if its in the ground of new paddock shes now in. shes on box rest for a few days then im going to try to get a different field for her and see how we go x
