Mud Fever.

QQ about mud fever.
My mum's mare Rowenna has got mud fever, none of ours have ever had mud fever before... So we have never had to treat it.

What are your cures, Standard, Homemade or slightly quirky all welcomed

keep the legs dry and clean as possible and use hibiscrub to clean them it is available in nearly all tack shops and fairly inexpensive

Clean the area off removing all the scabs, dry well, spray with purple spray and if the horse is going to be out in wet or muddy conditions apply zinc and castor oil cream liberally over the affected area to form a barrier between the wet/mud and skin.

Once you've GOT mud fever, you DO need to wash to get at the bugs and remove the scabs. Hibiscrub is VERY drying and if you use it, make sure you rinse thoroughly, pat dry thoroughly and THEN apply your favourite cream. I've used most - and my current favourite is Drapolene (a nappy rash cream, from your chemist.)

If there are a lot of scabs, plaster on the drapolene, then cling film over it, then bandage overnight. Next day most of the scabs will have come off. Repeat if necessary.

For prevention, either udder cream or Keratex powder applied liberally to clean, dry legs.

When Skye had mud fever the vet told me to plaster legs with antiseptic cream cover with cling film stable bandage to keep cling film in place and leave for 24 hours, when you take off most the scabs will have gone! then use udder cream or naf mud guard for prevention.

we have got a few with white legs and mud fever at the mo and having tried the suggested methods containing flowers of sulphur we resorted to asking the vet who mixed us up a 'potion' consisting of E45 cream injected with steriods and such like and it has worked wonders and actually works out cheaper than buying loads of other stuff.
I find that they all respond differently to different treatments tho tbh. Also it can reoccur super quick, my boy can have all his cleared up then have it all back in 2 days.:s

my horse used to get mud fever quite a bit so I clipped all the legs and it disappeared!
you can use keratex powder which is supposed to waterproof the legs

I never wash my mares legs and funnily enough ive only had one teeny weeny spot of Mudfever ages ago.

I just make sure her legs are brushed off once they have dried and she goes out with tons of sudocream on.

Conotrane cream is fabulous, removes the scabs for you so you dont have to pick them off.

Get the homoeopathy remedey tablets graphites, should sell it at your feed merchants. I swear by it, will help clear it up then carry on feeding it to prevent it.

I had the vet out monday fo my gelding and he checked mares legs because mud fever was making her leg swell he said to wash with hibiscrub twice a day (I towel dry after)and apply betnovate which you can buy over the counter (his will prob be 3x price ).The scabs have gone and its healing nicely.

wash with hibi scrub then apply flamazine wrap legs in clim film and banadges over night that will sweat the scabs off then once they are moved keep applying flamazine until healed then when they go back into field apply lots of barrier cream!
