Its starting already.

My horse gets terrible mud fever through winter and I have noticed the tell tale signs of it. LLast year the routine was scrub with hibiscrub, dry legs, sudocrem and then back out.
This year he is going to be stabled at night to see if this improves it, so I will be drying legs, sudocrem etc.

But i recently saw some equi chaps, or turnout chaps online. Would these work to keep his legs free from the mud, or would it just irritate his already sensitive skin?
Can these be left on for long periods of time? Im worried they might get wet and just be wet and awful on his legs?

Has anyone got any other mud fever prevention ideas?

I have some of the chaps, they do keep the mud out but I put over reach boots ontop to stop the bottoms of them rolling up in the mud! They cant be kept on 24/7 and can become damp so then need drying out before they can go back on. My winter turn out is only 4 hrs twice a week so this isnt really a problem for me but by the sounds of it your winter turn out is a lot better than mine! Have you tried leg guard and vasaline? I read last year about people on here that use pig oil?

I have a mare who gets mud fever during the summer! something to do with the fungi in the dew. I use a product called aromaheel the minute it starts. So far this year we have not had any.

He is out between 8am and about 6-7pm, in quite a muddy field unfortunatley but we cant help the field being bogged down by rain etc.

I am unsure about the leg guard stuff, havnt heard any positive experiences, but if anyone has any suggestions!

Lordy100, thanks i will certainly look into this, thanks!

pig oil and sulphur is meant to be the best thing to prevent it as the mud just slides off. theres an ebay shop that does it and something like heavy horse supplies.

My friend uses Malaseb - an anti fungal shampoo for dogs and cats on her horse's mud fever, she thinks it's better than hibiscrub. You can only get it from the vet though.

robinsons own "prevent it" very cheap and very good, water and mud just slides off it, not sure if they still sell it though

bathsheba:
this Keratex mud shield powder. When you bring in do you wash the legs, brush off or just leave? Do you reapply it every day? and how long does the tub last?

I hose the mud off when she comes in. I also keep her lower leg area clipped so it dries quickly. The Keratex is applied liberally to dry legs before turnout. A tub costs £10 ish and I get through about 3/ 4 tubs over the winter period.

Having tried pig oil, sulphur, sudocream, hibiscrub, mud shield and supplements, I have had some recent success with Equi chaps and vinegar! But I don't think my mare has mud fever - I think its a grass allergy or suchlike - theres been no mud for months.
