hi i know this is not a new subject on here but really dont know what to do next been treating it for 3 weeks now, had vet on wednesday now on antibiotics she isnt lame but the leg that is worse, all up her cannon bone really swells up over night it was going down with excercise and turnout but past two days it is going down but not right down anymore really dont know what to think never dealt with mudfever to this extent before

when V had it just a tiny bit last yr i picked the scabs off washed with hibiscrub and dried thouroghly then i put loads of tescos nappy rash creme on every day before turnout and that seemed to do the trick now i do it as preventative.

You need to get some topical, antibiotic lotion from your vet. Do not be tempted to wash the legs - but please contact your vet again, before it gets worse.

I think its called Flamazine that I ended up using when I was looking after someone horse for them. The hibiscrub helped soften the scabs but it just would not clear, this cream was great, expensive but very effective. After it had cleared if it was wet I used to use udder cream as a preventative. Good luck getting it cleared

Am assuming your vet has been able to advise you further and hope that your horse is doing okay.

If this happens another time, you need to wash and carefully dry the affected areas as best as you can. Then slar lots of Sudocreme all over, wrap in cling film with bandages or wraps on the top and then after two or three hours you should be able to just wipe away the scabs as they will have softened.

After that make sure you keep the areas as protected as possible with whatever topical application works for you. There are so many out there. We have used udder cream, Keratex powder, Gold Label leg guard and Sudocreme and are just trying pig oil and sulphur. Ours have never had mud fever - touch wood - but I know how horrible it can be for the horse and for the owner to treat.

Good luck in getting it all cleared up.
