pony has 3 white legs with very pink skin
and has now got mud fever on her back leg; never had it in the 3 years i have had her

the vet came out about 1 and 1/2 weeks ago.
told us to hibiscrub it twice a day and dermosil it
(its not mud fever, well it basically is but its up her legs and all scabby)
after the scabs had gone we got told to use sterile cream, but that made her leg really pink (she had to have all the fur clipped off) so now we are just hibiscrubbing it and covering it in sudocrem
she was on danillon and nordine for a week; twice a day

once its healed a bit more, we will put a mud fever barrier on and sports boots on her back legs, and brushing boots and over reaches on her fronts to turn out

is there anything i can do?
when she comes out of her stable in the morning its warm and puffy...

I wouldn't want to put OR boots on, or brushing boots on to turn out it.. They're more likely to get mud in the area and aggravate the problem.
I know some people on her use turnout gaiters that prevents the mud getting to the legs. It may be worth having a look at them.

Does she wear stable bandages? As this can reduce swelling, although if it goes down after she's had a stretch out I wouldn't be overly worried about the problem.

My old boy had terrible mud fever every winter, the only thing that cured/kept it abay was Conotrane Cream (and I tried everything), you can get it over the counter at the chemist, it worked wonders for me although I know many other people who have had just a good a results with many other products. Good luck its not an easy war to win.

^ there the back boots, and the back leg is the one with it.
i havent put them on until it gets better, as i didnt want to aggrivate it; her front ones are ok though, so i put fronts on to stop her cutting herself in the field

turnout gaiters are really expensive arent they?

we are going to get some magnetic stable bandages; to help the swelling, but money hasnt been available to get them!!!

stable bandages at the moment are more important than turnout ones

unless you can recommend cheap turnout boots?

get your vet to make you a mud fever cream ... aqueous cream + antibiotics+steroid works well. muddy marvel works well too! i wouldnt keep washing in hibi scrub it is very astringent and strips all the natural oils and grease. dont scrub either!!

ok... thanks for that too
we dont scrub it, we just wash off the mud and crap before shes turned out and when she comes in...

will suggest all of these things to mum

make sure its healed 100% before you start putting on boots. Also if she's turned out for long periods when its raining don't rely on the turnout boots, as the water does seep through and just gets the legs wet and rubs them

I have only had tb or tbx horses so not much hair on legs but on advice of my vet wash my horse's legs with copious amount of cold water every day when he comes in with wet mud on his legs until water runs clear. I don't dry his legs, he has a thick straw bed and no feather. If he does get any scabs I rub vegetable oil on them until they lift off of their own accord so avoiding any soreness. I then put on green oils if mild or fuciderm if redness showing. I bought some turn out boots for my last horse and found mud went up inside boots and condition made worse! Perhaps technology of boots has moved on! I'm all for the simple and cheap approach though!
