keep them clean and dry
pick scabs off with hibiscrub (warm water better than cold)
clip heels to expose scabs
I use camrosa - seems to get rid of the soreness quickly, and it promotes good hair regrowth
i have been washing her legs with either hibiscrub or antibac shampoo from vets we have at yard but mines turnt out during the day and i have read somewhere that its not good to wash their legs off everyday with water??
I have to say that the 'old' way of washing the legs at the start of treatment and then blathering with a barrier cream such as udder cream always worked well. We never picked scabs off as it leads to infection and they should soften and fall off naturally under the barrier cream. We would only wash once a week and the main thing is to ensure they are thoroughly dry afterwards before putting anything on. I cringe when I see people at our yard washing off legs in freezing cold weather and not drying them properly before turning the horse out again. I also believe that washing off muddy legs and not drying properly is probably what leads to it in many cases. We have 10 living out knee deep in mud at the moment and not one of them has any sign of mud fever.
