Ted has quite long feathers which are quite thick and he goes out everyday in a field where the entrance/exit is really deep mud so everyday he comes in which wet muddy legs. The lumps of mud in his feathers dont seem to go right down to his skin but I wanted to know if he is at risk of getting mud fever .. I leave his legs to dry and then brush as much as I can of the mud everyday. Is this the right way to do it or do they have to be washed etc .. ? He doesnt currently have mud fever but I want to prevent it

Don't wash the legs as I used to do this with my hairy horse and they never dry out. Do a search on here about pig oil and sulphur. When your horses feathers are clean and dry apply pig oil and sulphur this stops the mud sticking and keeps the feathers really nice.

So right! I too use pig oil mixed with flowers of sulphur (apply it twice a week with a paint brush) and it actually works!

Only complaint I have is that it makes the feet/legs slippery for the farrier
