hey,
What is the best stuff to get for mudfever, my horse hasnt got mudfever but what to put something on to prevent him from getting it...

Any suggestions...........

There are so many opinions on this and guess something different works for each horse....After buying S when she had mild mudfever I now use plain pig oil with no sulpher to protect and prevent.
 
I use sudocreme both to prevent it and if they get it (before i start putting it on to prevent!) A livery on the yard used udder cream on her horse to prevent it.
 
i use pig oil as a preventative, and pig oil and sulphur if they already have it, have also used sudocream however i found it didnt stay on as well (pig oil you can leave 5-7days between each application) and pig oil is cheaper (£20 for about 5 litres lasts me all winter)
 
in the past i've used vasceline (or petroleum jelly ;)) but it was so slimey and legs had to be super clean or you'd be effectively sealing in the bad bugs.
really like muddy marvels stuff and used to last two weeks between applications.
 
Equimins udder cream! brilliant stuff, I use it every year on my white legged mare in boggy clay soil and never had a problem. It is a light cream which forms a very good waterproof/antiseptic barrier and does not go sticky. Give it a try!
 
Most important (I've found) is diet. High minerals (esp copper and zinc) and low sugar.

Global Herb's Mud-X is also worth a try.

As a barrier, I am fond of Keratex Mud Powder - best thing I've tried yet.

I actually second this! Last winter my TB was always getting it and it never really cleared up until spring, despite spending overall about 10 days in a box. His diet was winter grass (poor) and hay when needed, and his bucket feed Alfa Oil with 2 scoops of a cheaper conditioning mix split into two feeds.

This year all we've had are a couple of scabs which cleared up quickly and I just checked his legs today and nothing. Their field is plenty muddy enough and I haven't been as good as I usually am about putting Sudocrem on, and funnily enough he's fed Alfa Oil, Baileys performance balancer and Outshine. I initially fed him this to give him all he needs with minimal starch levels (he's a cribber and has been shoeless for the past 8 weeks).

In fact as I was checking his legs earlier I was wondering if it's his diet which has been the most effective preventative factor this year...
 
I have used Keratex powder, it worked really well. If you think you can get away with something a little less total in coverage then Nettex 7 day mud away is very effective.
 
I totally swear by NAF Mud Guard feed supplement. Totally cured lots of horses mud fever without even TOUCHING the legs - cures from the inside out. I now use it in wet conditions to prevent it and it WORKS and they love the taste too.
