My horse has became really sore with mud fever behind.I got told to treat it with goose fat.Ive been treating them for over a week,with no real joy.Does anyone have any other ideas of alternitve treatment??:confused:
 
If it is very sore, then you need a course of antibiotics to get rid of the infection first, which is what I had to do. I then use sudocream. I used baby cream called bepathnon to soften the scabs, do not pick them, and then when all clear sudocream warmed up for ease of use plastered on, and then keep on top of it on adaily basis.
 
i had to call the vet for my boy and had antibiotics she then gave us some dermisol cream which soothes, heals and lifts the scabs off within a week he is looking soooo much better almost gone!
 
Best thing I found after a balanced diet for prevention was Aromaheel used it on a horse I had on trial who had the worse case of it I had seem and it work so well and quick too. Unfortunatly since its not registered in NZ you can no longer bring it in here which is a shame altho I haven't had a case of mudfever in 15 years since sorting diets.
 
Buy some Nizoral shampoo from a chemist.

Dilute with hand hot water, lather up well working well into the hair down to the skin. Leave for at least 10 mins then rinse off. I personally leave it on to dry.

Please don't pick off scabs - they will come away when the skin behind them stops oozing lymph the result of the fungal attack on the skin. Picking them off is very painful for the horse and as it truly breaks the skin (draws blood) runs the risk of introducing bacteria.

For protection Neem Oil and ensuring the horse is getting essential minerals such as Copper & Zinc which strengthen the skin.

Another vote for aromaheel. Best thing Ive ever used.
 
I have just used camrosa shampoo and ointment. Can't recommend it highly enough! My horse went from having what I would say was terrible mud rash and swollen legs to no scabs and healthy pink skin within 10 days. Only had to keep her in for 48hrs. Couldn't be happier with results.
