There seems to be ever changing advice how to treat and I take little notice as horses don't suffer from it thank god.... Until now.
So I washed his legs well using a very mild hibi solution and then rinsed off- during this most of the scabs came away but I've not purposely picked them off? What's the advice on this now? Used to be pick off but since heard not to .
I dried as much as you can dry hairy legs (might clip off effected area?) and applied aloe gel.
What's the quickest most effective way at clearing it? Poor boy will be in til its gone.

I tried every product and regime on the market over the last year when one of mine had it very badly, and the other slightly. The worst one had antibiotics, hibi and picking, (the WORST, and nearly got my head kicked off), wrapping in cling film with potions under, Naff, Lincoln, vet stuff...the blinkin' lot. Then I read on here about pig oil and sulphur, I modified it to baby oil and sulphur....and it worked. It actually did.

I just slather it on, then 24 hours later massage some more on and the scabs just slide off. Then re apply every few days, with the 24 hr later massage if there are still scabs. No pain for the horse, the sulphur kills the bugs, and the oil acts as a water barrier. Cheap too. Win win win.:)

It has to be Flowers of Sulphur, easily obtainable online and goeas a long way.

My las has mild mud fever and I washed legs a couple of times in hibi scrub and it was a pain aO now I just spray athletes foot spray on and all the hair has grown back
It's easier for me a no feather, just a few hairs on back on knees so can spray straight into skin. I have sprayed pig oil and sulphur on him twice just before he went out when it's really muddy he stays in.
Have also just got some PE turnout boots which so far seem great

Only ever had a small amount due to installation of a new riding surface rather than when out. I washed with hibi scrub picked off the scabs then used fusiderm gel over the worst areas and covered a large area with sudocrem. It went quickly and healed up within a fortnight.
