Mud rash just not going even though had vet out 4 times!

I felt that I was finally getting on top of Grace's mud rash... the scabs were coming off, the skin was healthy and pink underneath and she had not been out once in 4-5 weeks.

I have come away and just had a text to say that it is getting bad again even though she has not been out, is on a clean dry bed and is having the steroid cream applied every day as instructed.

She has already been on antibiotics for 2 weeks given when the vets have been up and I am now coming to the end of my tether!
 
Yep... tried everything before getting the vets up!

They said the steroid tablets, antibiotics and the steroid cream should all work and were working before i came away. But just had a text to say she has thick black scabs on one of her legs again...
 
LOL stimpy! Your cat is very fluffy and you might need to use some dental floss after....

Have you tried dermobian?

Is that how you spell it!

just another suggestion (probably heard this before but how about washing in hibiscrub, drying throughly and then a strong old wash of iodine? just an idea?? poor you two, hope it gets better soon

Think I am just going to tell the person who is looking after her to get the vet out in the morning and just have it looked at again... feel really annoyed because there were no scabs at all hardly when I came away

Demobian is no longer an available Vet. medicine. It was withdrawn a while ago.

This is true, but plenty of people still have it, having stocked up on that as well as creosote!
 
The oldie i ride had the same problem a while back, constant washing in hibiscrub and applying dermobian was doing nothing - which is a shame as normally it was very good.. - vet gave some other medicated shampoo which did the trick, it's called Maloseb, you just wet the area... put some maloseb on a brush...scrub, make a lather, leave for a while to soften the scabs, go back, scrub a bit more, then rinse off... dry well and leave, till next day..do this for 5 days... Steroids are all very well and do have their place, but they will eventually thin the skin, making it easy for bacteria to get in again.

Colloidial Silver will also work, but this is expensive stuff!
 
Mud Fever - How to get on top of it.....

Sulphur powder (my local tack shop sells this by the bucket load!) mixed with glycerine into a paste. Slap it on all over, cover with plastic (not clingfilm), bandage and leave on for 24 hours. Then wash off and spray on a solution of 1 part vinegar to 5 parts water. Leave the legs uncovered, and spray the vinegar solution on liberally 2 or 3 times a day for a few days. Once all the scabs have fallen off and the skin is clean, use keratex to keep the skin clean and dry and prevent further outbreaks.

The above was given to me by one of the senior vets at Langford and it certainly works.

TBH, i have done nothing with her legs, i haven't washed and scrubbed them, or covered them in god noes what, Ive just left them, if they get muddy, leave them to dry out and brush mud off in morning. Ive found the more you wash and put crap on, the worse it gets. You need to let the area dry out, not keep covering it. Yes it may keep mud out, but its also seals bacteria IN.
I am by no means an expert, and feel free to ignore me, but its worked for me.
