I am a new horse owner and yesterday I noticed my horse's lower leg was swollen and there was a raised crusty lump.

I assumed she was kicked, sprayed her down with cold water and put her out.

Today my friend looked at it and said it was mud rash - she was right.

I'd be grateful if you guys could put forward your views and experiences to help me understand and become familiar with this.

I treat my horse with Flamazine (from the vet) if he gets mud fever, which is thankfully quite rare now. He did have a bad dose of it a few years back.
It can appear if the horse has a nick/sore and the mud gets in it, so if your horse does have a cut when it goes out, pay special attention to it.
Best thing to do, is wash with hibiscrub (or similar), leave for 10mins and then wash off. Dry affected area with preferably a paper towel, if using a towel, do not use on other area and wash after use. If it is not too bad, that might be enough to clear it up. If it is bad, a call to the vet for some cream might be the way to go.

My mare gets mud fever at this time of year, its not mud fever but a similar fungal infection. Flamazine works but I need such large quantities that I have found the following to be very good, Mudguard feed supplement, Hibiscrub, Fungatrol spray and shampoo and finally Aromoheel (sp?) Aromoheel is very good at softening any scabs making it easy to pick them off.
