I’m trying to think of a solution to my muddy dog. This will be our first winter with her and I’m despairing already.

She’s a long haired German shepherd. She comes to the horses twice a day and it’s muddy already in places. I could hose her underneath off but her coat is like a sponge and then I’m thinking I’ll have a soaking wet dog in the boot twice a day and it will also take her hours to dry. She’s too big for me to get into the bath on my own and anyway, she’d then be permanently wet which is not good.

Has anyone had success with raincoats that cover the underneath? I’m all for giving her a trace clip but OH not so keen ?

I used waterproof dog overalls for a medium size long haired dog (not GSD) as the snow used to collect in big clumps on her legs and belly. It had a covered zip along the back. One of those might work for mud.

Weatherbeeta do a 'dry dog bag', could you put her in one of those whilst she travels home? I haven't used one so can't comment how good they are, sorry!
We are only a mile or so from home so she’d still be wet. Her coat is like a sponge! I would walk there but she’s very nervous and I don’t think she’d cope with that.

see post below...
but if you don’t want to clip underbelly, gillrugs do an unlined waterproof ,with belly protector.......

I would clip her underbelly,I do this with my schnauzer..you still have the wonder full coated dog but a lot of your issues will be solved..it is called a false skirt..

Ruff & Tumble dog coat for the car, then hose her at home and then use a blaster. I only have shorthaired shepherds now but have owned two longcoats in the past so understand your angst in this horrid wet muddy weather. The blaster I bought was an absolute godsend and while some dogs haven't particularly liked it they have tolerated it. Thankfully the two I have now enjoy it so just stand while I blast them before they come in the house.
