Muddy gateways

Now that the weather has dried up, I'm thinking of doing something with the gateways before next winter.

I've considered road planings or those mats that the grass can grow through - perhaps a combination of both, although I'm not sure if the mats should go over the planings or vice-versa.

If anyone has any suggestions or experience of what works well, I'd really appreciate your views.
Thanks!

Mudcontrol mats here, too. Honestly, the place never even got started with mud last autumn and I have 'pontoons' of them anywhere that might even think of getting chewed up. And I move them about, too. I can't tell you how handy they are for all sorts of jobs and once you start with them...

One of my gateways was horrendous I honestly could hardly get in. Awful clay and really deep. Being desperate we put some old arena surface on top and it’s been a godsend, I can’t believe what a difference it’s made. I would of used mud control mats in normal circumstances but it was awful when we moved during the wet weather

How flat/ level do you need to make the area before putting the mats down and how far out into the field do you tend to put them?
