My New Forest has a very thick mane and tail, if I don't brush it daily it does into ringletts. Plus all the mud is sticking to him, Literally!

What can I do to keep the mud away from him? Obviously living out, he will be muddy, but he's a mud bug!! All the other horses come in sort of clean, he brings half the field with him!

I've used pig oil, mane and tail, baby oil... Grooming everyday but he doesn't like the spray bottle, panics him (we're getting there though) so I am pouring/straying onto a sponge/flannel to get it onto his coat.
I use pig oil on legs and anything that isn't covered by rug (eg: neck, ears, mane, tail, legs, fetlocks, etc) but I come down next morning and he's covered!!

Other than covering him in clingfilm or stabling him 24/7 - what can I do?

He lives out all year round, and if I don't groom him one day - the next its a nightmare and he does get quite agitated with brushing mud from his mane especially if using no mane and tail or oil.

Thank You :)

the best thing I have found for our muddy horses is a full neck rug. If you trim his tail to hock length, spray it liberally with mane and tail spray or pig oil, plait it into one or two plaits and secure tightly that will stop his tail getting all tangled and it should brush out easily. I leave tails plaited for several days at a time and they always brush out nicely.

I have a show cob and I have done the deed like cazD says and cut his tail very short the other day....but what a godsend, hock length! Its so much easier, no filthy ends. It will.. grow... back.....

I got some Barrier free flow and shine(not a spray), a product I had not tried and absolutely plastered half the bottle on the tail that is left.....very good! Sold as good for dreadlocks which is what made me buy it! Plastering the tail ends in oil also helps me but have been impressed with this stuff.

Definitely use a neck if you don't already. You can always use a lighter hood than the rug just to keep him cleaner.

I do try and wash his legs and tail once a week and it does help, rubbing oil in the legs whilst wet is also good for next time. I tend not to groom much, mine is put 24/7 and I find washing it all off once a week is better.

My mud monster wears a rug with a neck but still comes in with mud all over, including eyelashes! I've found Nettex 7 Day Mud Away spray really good. (spray onto dandy brush if pony averse to sprays). Doesn't stop the rolling and clarting, but mud just brushes straight off, and leaves a nice shine, as long as mud is dry, that is.
