Muddy horses tips !!!

just wandering what other people's tips are
When horses are still being turned out but in muddy fields , mine came in like a mud bath today , clipped so have had full necks on ,
Plait Thier tails to try and prevent some of the mud , !!! Thanks x

He's rugged in a full neck so keeps fairly clean, I only need to brush his face and girth area before I ride, I don't faff about with his tail till it's dry!

mine doesn't 'do' mud but i would wait for it to dry and brush it off, and hot cloth the get the dust off

Ours aren't rugged. They come in having rolled to get a good covering all over, as that is their answer to keeping the wind and rain out.

The round metal sprung curry combs are the only answer. Still won't remove wet mud, but shift dry stuff like nothing else.

I have a pure bred arab with a very long mane and tail and he loves the mud, I find mane and tail spray all over helps the mud not stick so much, but i never brush the mane and tail i just pick the mud off or it pulls the hair out, I also find a metal scourer for saucepans is great for getting mud off the body, much better than a brush they cant feel it like a brush, and they are very cheap try it!

Completely agree with the round metal curry combs, they are a god send!

Mine is fully clipped and I find a cactus mit is great for removing dry mud.

Leannepip, think I might have seen you at the Hunter Trail at Three Maids, but didnt realise it was you, hope you had a good day.

Unlike yours mine do do mud- big time..lol - but are both fully clipped, rugged up with neck covers and mostly live out all year.
my tips are hot clothing with a bit of dettol and baby oil in the water, do this perhaps once a week though not too often unless going to a show. also for tails bucket of hot water with a big squirt of baby oil , dip tail in which cleans off all the mud and help stop it sticking afterwards as well!
always leave wet muddy legs to dry then rub mud off and spray with canter shine or similar

Cactus cloth/mit and those grooming blocks are the way forward when it comes to removing mud off my hippo - sorry horse who's fully clipped but never wears a full neck rug so plenty of grooming for me!

I have two greys - one of whom is average on the muddiness stakes and one of whom is half horse half hippo. Prevention being better than cure, full clips and covering them up from nose to tail are the only option.

Snuggy hoods are a must. None of the cheap alternatives are any good but they have some excellent offers on their website. Sign up to their newsletter and you know when they've got offers on. I've never paid more than £40 for one. Mine also have tailbags which are brilliant and touch wood, they've never lost them.

I also spray their legs, armpits and ears in pig oil (I buy a big 5l bottle and put it in a spray bottle) which stops the mud clinging too much.

When I do have to get mud off them, I find the round metal curry comb good, but one of them (yes the hippo!) won't let me use it on him, so for him a rubber mitten the best thing. I bought it in Pets at Home as a dog grooming mitten, but my dog's hair was too long for it so I tried it out on the horse and it was great. Loosen it all with that and a flick with a dandy brush to pull the mud dust off the coat.

Pigoil their legs and slightly on their face, keeps mine clean even though living out in the mud!
