Hi everyone, I am looking to get something new this year to prevent mud rash which my horse has previously had. I have used requisite leg guard for years but last year my horse developed some kind of sensitivity to it. I don't know if they changed the ingredients but a few minutes after putting it on she'd be stamping her legs and you could tell it was stinging her or something (having been fine for years). Since this happening she's not as keen on having things on her legs so I want to use something that doesn't need applying regularly. The muddy marvel barrier cream says it lasts up to a week and I just wondered if people found that it actually did and does it make the legs easier to brush and stop the mud sticking? I loved this about the requisite leg guard. She doesn't have her legs washed just brushed. If anyone uses the barrier cream I'd be grateful if you could let me know how you find it? Thank you! :-) Lucy x

You have to apply it twice a week for the first 2 weeks, thereafter once per week. I found that it did last a week, and stopped mudfever. I didn't brush or wash the legs though. It's quite gunky & I imagine would clog up a brush, plus brushing causes microdermabrasions which can let in the bugs which cause MF.

I use it. No, it doesn't last a week but it is amazing stuff. I first bought some when my horse had bad mud fever in the summer and it cleared it up really quickly - I needed to apply it every day though. Now I'm just using it as a preventative and find I still need to apply twice a week or more, otherwise it starts again. When the ground is dry I don't use it but now we're waterlogged, I've started again.

Thanks for the message Twostroke. Please can I just ask you before you reapply the cream after the week do you wash or brush the legs before putting another lot on? I didn't realise that about brushing, I used to love the requisite leg guard though as it needed applying 2 x week but kept the mud off and only needed a quick brush before re-applying. If the muddy marvel is gunky I'm thinking it may need washing off before re-applying or does it just go straight back on? Thanks :-)

Thanks for the message chestnut cob. I guess it may be a bit of trial and error then! I just wish my horse was still OK with the requisite leg guard as it was perfect for her until the problems last winter! :-)

I brush legs off first if they are very muddy, otherwise how is the cream going to get to the legs to heal any cracks? I wait until the mud is dry, quick brush off and cover the heels in cream.

It's really good stuff, I wouldn't use anything else now :)

Thanks again Chestnut cob. I was wondering if it would brush off OK before re-applying if the legs were a bit sticky from the cream but I assume it is if thats what you do. I'd prefer to brush than have to wash it off. Thanks again :-)
