My mare is nervous to clip. although she stands still, she trembles and is very jumpy when turning the clippers on. as well as trying to desensitise her to the sound, I have been advised to try bandage pads in her ears to deaden the sound, however, can someone please explain to me how I make them or do I buy them. my idiot brain keeps picturing rolled up bandages sticking out of her ears lol

Cotton wool? May be easier. I spent time with my cant clip unless sedated horse, turning on the clippers, progreeing to holding them on him and he allowed me to do a large bib clip. He did freak out at the hair falling, but I kept them on him, stayed very calm and followed him round on a loose rein and he suddenly gave up and let me do it.

thanks Louby. I have progressed exactly the same as you. she will even let me do between her ears but she just jumps every time I turn them on and off.... I will try cotton wool, thankyou

Might sound mad, but use tampax - you will be able to remove the plugs easily using the string

Mine has to be heavily sedated to clip (if he were younger would have tried De sensitising but he's older and that nervous of them I'm not sure I'd ever be able to "fix" as he's head shy too.)

He has cotton wool in his ears when sedated just have to make sure I remove it before he's awake! I did a clip without the cotton wool and one with this season and the difference was noticeable. He made quite a funny sight leaning drunkenly against the wall with his cotton wool in though

Lol thank you. its good to hear that it may actually make a difference and is worth giving it a shot.

How about turning them on and off outside the stable. Or leaving a radio on loud so you can turn it down once you start clipping. If she doesn't mind being clipped she probably won't mind you walking in and out with the clippers on.
