When I had two dogs I did favour my older dog (Penny). I tried at first to be impartial. However I had been through so much with Penny that I tended to put her first. When she passed on I eventually develop a strong bond with my other dog. As other people seem to have reported here, our relationship and connection isn't the same. He can't replace Penny, but he in his own way has become the companion that I am looking for from my dog.
I recently came across this article from Scientific American ("Why We Need to Take Pet Loss Seriously") that I found interesting and, perhaps, relevant to this topic.
