We are 4 days away from getting our 3rd dog, I'm looking for what people with lots of dogs do to make sure their house doesn't smell 'Doggy'.

They sleep in the hallway so I worried when we open the front door the smell will welcome people!

I keep blankets over their beds and change these as and when - mostly weekly. Then wash the beds when needed - probably not often enough!

But do you used oils or plug ins? candles?

Hard flooring. Regular hoovering. Regular spray or something nice/use of candles. Throws on soft furnishings that get regularly washed and changed. Weirdly I’ve found not having them all sleep in the same place/room really helpful in terms of minimising strong general doggy smells.

Hard flooring all through, no carpets, hoover and mop floor regularly, wash bedding regularly, I put tops over their beds , either towels or duvet covers so just wash those not the whole beds. Brush all 3 most days . Friends have said my cottage doesn’t smell doggy so I assume it doesn’t . I’ve got 2 short haired and one fluffy, the fluffy one needs brushing almost every day and the other 2 line up for their turn so I do all 3

The first trick is to have spitz breeds that don’t have greasy coats or dog odour. Although I have a major fail incoming on that front ? The second trick is to be anti social and have few visitors. What few we have are warned about the hair rather than the smell, really.

Already failed there!! 2 x Labs and a JRT.

Perfect! Sounds like I'm doing the right things - will just up the Anti!

Our JRT is strangely scared of the Utility room, but I might move the Labradors into there then JRT can stay in the hall! All hard floors throughout, bar the living room but that's closed off in the week so shouldn't be a problem.

Just have to sit on my hands until Saturday now!

I always had carpets when I had 3 dogs, I used to hoover regularly and the dogs were out with me a lot of the time but the only thing I did was dry the dogs with a towel before they came in the house, I don't use air fresheners, scented candles, I do use essential oils but mostly upstairs, the dogs were not allowed upstairs or on the furniture but the lurcher didn't read the memo for that one. Biggest tips are dry the dogs and have leather sofas.
My mum is the biggest dog critic (and mine) in the world and doesn't have any house pets and even she would say in a surprised voice that my house did not smell.

I know I need to change the cover on their bed when I can smell dog. We tiled the lounge when we first got dogs, although that's not ideal when they're young, studies how that environment including slippy floors can massively contribute to joint issues.

Have we heard about that one yet?

I was thoroughly told off for mentioning using any kind of nice smelling product on a dog-I don't, personally, but there was an outcry about it. Given that dogs have a far superior sense of smell, I imagine it would be horrible for them.

Sucky the robot does the real work, five mins to throw mop around while kettle boils in the morning. Fleeces on a 30min quick wash, hung in a slovenly manner on the banisters of the landing to dry and usually back on that evening.

I am not a domestic goddess I assure you!

We have 3 dogs and my husband has OCD and can’t stand smells! Lol! It’s a challenge but doable! I wash dog bed regularly, the dogs have nice smelling body spray from Pets at Home and if you have carpets we purchased a vax carpet vac and we give the carpets a wash over every so often.
