Multiple tow vehicles and number plates

Does anyone have more than one tow vehicle that they use to tow their trailer? I'm about to buy a trailer but will be borrowing cars to tow with which means potentially multiple number plates. Is there a way of doing this without buying a plate for ever single car? I know they aren't expensive, but they aren't that cheap either. If there isn't I'll just have to send the multiple owners to Halfords for me!
 
Don't go to halfords they are more expensive... your friend is ebay! Some people do relpacement plates in pairs, you can ask for them both to be the yellow and you could ask for two different number plates in the pair redcuding the cost!
 
you are supposed to have a proper plate to the rear that corresponds to towing vehicle. If you want to get really technical it can be 3 points and £60 for displaying wrong or no plate. I was also under the impression you need a v5 to make number plates up to try to stop cloning.
 
What would you feel if the UK bought in the system we have here in Canada where each trailer has a plate of its' own? Do you think it would be simpler?

But...the plate does not go with the trailer (or car/truck/whatever) permanently, it is registered to the Owner. So, we can sell our trailer for example, but the new owner would have to register and safety it and buy a new plate which does not correspond with the towing vehicle.

Even my Quad has a proper registration plate!
 
I get the sticky ones made up at local car shop & whichever car I'm not using I just cover the plate up with electrical tape (if that makes sense!!)
 
OK I'm maybe a bit over the top on this but I have six trailers and three vehicles capable of towing. Each trailer has the number plate of the vehicle that would normally tow it properly fixed to it. I also have another one or two spare plates for each of the vehicles which are drilled in the corners to take bungee cords so that I can use any vehicle with any trailer and if I happen to borrow a trailer I can still be legal by just bungeeing the correct plate in place. To set all that up was considerably cheaper than getting just one fine.
 
I keep the spare plate for the disco in the boot !

You could do one trip with the V5s and have a selection or the yellow plastic idea is a really good one

Better than a scrap of card and a biro which I see all the time
 
I have a special holder that easily allows number plates to be changed on the trailer. Didn't cost that much and OH put it on when we still had the disco, as we would tow the trailer with either the L200 or the disco....

It's the same in Poland, and the trailer needs an insurance and an ''MOT'', just the same as a car. I think it is actually good and ensures fewer death traps being towed around.

Sounds like a very sound idea to me! And yes, in answer to your earlier question it is the Indespension one :) I couldn't get down last weekend so am going on Saturday with cash in my pocket. I spoke to Indespension earlier today and they seemed pretty confident that they'd still be able to find parts for it, despite not making horse boxes anymore. Fingers crossed it doesn't turn out to be a total dog in person as I'm quite excited at the prospect of getting some wheels. Fortunately OH is coming with me to be the voice of reason as I am likely to get all silly and want it whatever its faults. I'd genuinely be safer going to look at a horse, those I can take or leave! lol

To everyone, thank you very much for all your input. I will definitely have a proper number plate made up for the car I will be using most of the time (although I won't have one for Saturday as I literally do not have the time to sort it out before then :( ). The others, well I'll just cross that bridge when I get to it. Knowing what a goody two shoes I am I'll most likely end up with one for all of them! :)
 
Its easy enough, get a holder which you can just slide the number plate into. Have one for your regular car and buy a blank one.

If you hire or borrow a towing vehicle you can either have a stock of black stick on numbers and letters or use a permanent marker (the stuff you need alcohol to remove)

Its what the local trailer hire people use around here.

Dont print out a number, its not on the proper reflective material and that illegal. Some of the police cameras can pick it up apparently.
 
Sat bored waiting for OH to finish footy so if anyone needs a sedative: as has been said, there are laws about number plates. Legally, they now need to display on them somewhere the maker's details - just the reg isn't actually allowed - and there are rules regarding letter height, font, pin colouring and horizontal spacing. I'm a goody two shoes and wouldn't want to be stopped for something so pedantic so just get them made up properly :o on phone but will see if I can find the link if anyone is still awake after reading this...
