I think there are some taes of the composite stirrup irons failing when under stress too. Again they seem to be fine for dressage, but the stress & weight that are put into the stirrups when jumping is quite phenomenal. I am rubbish at physics, but I bet there is a clever bod on here who could explain the massive weight increase caused when you land over a jump. See, I can't even explain that very well......... :)
