Muscle atrophy

Has anyone had a horse with masseter muscle wastage?

Sorry no experience of it but I know its not very nice and can be associated with selenium deficiency? Hope vet is on hand.

Our vet can not explain and has no suggested treatment, my boy has been xrayed and blood tested and nothing has showed up!
It's just on one side of his face

Can you look online and see who has expereince of it? Can your vet refer to specialist?

We've been in touch with a specialist but no joy
Keep doing research but seems quite rare......
He's eating ok and seems comfortable which is good
Not sure if the muscle will come back? Have been massaging it but not sure if TENS might help too?

It's interesting, I've just been looking it up too but mainly both sides? What did vet say about the vit-e?

I really hope he gets better but good he's eating well... the worst cases can't seem to eat.

Thanks Tallyho I've just been reading up on selenium and vitamin E difficiency and I think you might be onto something, it also points to thyroid issues too, I'm going to discuss this with the vet as they want him to go on thyroxine to help with his EMS and PPID
