About 6 months ago my 2yr old jumped out of the field causeing himself intense pain but an unknown injury as his entire front leg was swollen from top to toe. the vet thought an x-ray of his elbow would be benificial however nothing abnormal was found. About four weeks later he was fully sound and the swelling had gone so he went back out in the field and was perfectly fine until about 4 weeks ago when he developed a swelling just above his knee on the same leg it was as big as a tennis ball and not hot not painfull to touch and didn't make him lame i called the vet again who scanned it and what seemed to be an unknown object was seen on the screen he was then x-rayed in the same place however nothing was found, i was told that the lump is just muscle tears healing and that he will always be left with a lump and to box rest him for 4 weeks, its been just 3 weeks now that he's been rested and the lump is just as big but now its more pionted in shape and really really hard. Does anyone have a similar experience or knowledge of muscle damage like this?

Did the vet perscribe anything to help bring the swelling down?

My horse has a lump under his belly from where he was opened up twice for colic surgery. I understand this to be caused by where the muscle has healed. However the location does not cause me any bother with my horse.

Perhaps it would be worth talking to your vet about whether the use of massage/cold therapy etc would help with the healing process.

We have used hydrotherapy with sucess to bring down swellings in legs. I have also used rugs/dressing which reflect heat into the body to keep muscles warm.

I hope you can get something sorted out, however it may be that it is now too far down the process and you may always have some swelling.
