What is everyones preference / recomendations? We dont have any radios at our yard, there arent many electrical points... unless i get a small radio that runs on batteries or run an extension cable over the yard to my stable / arena i dont have anyway of listening to music at the yard.

Birthday is coming up and i have asked for money towards buying either an Ipod/MP3 player etc... what do you lot have and what do you recomend? Also dont know if i should get a docking station with speakers or just listen with headphones...

I use one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PINK-HARD...sories_Cases_Covers_Skins&hash=item336f838c28 clipped to the D-ring at the front of the saddle with an mp3 player in it. That way, the horse can hear the music as well! I have to say that it works a treat - my mare will change pace according to the music - her excuse is that "it's CANTER music Mum!"

I also have soundschooling riding lessons on the mp3 player, for when I need telling what to do!

If its a livery yard where lots of people will hear the music they must have a licence even if its your own radio as its a business :(

so worth checking before you plug anything in!

The stable block opposite our school has speakers wired in, so you can have the radio/a cd playing quietly whilst you mince on the yard, and if you whack it up a bit you can school to it too - its cool

Mine's tuned to Radio 2, it goes on first thing and off last thing, and nobody is allowed to fiddle with it, but I turn it off on Sundays after Steve Wright because not even the horses should be subjected to the rubbish on R2 on Sunday afternoon!

OP the wind up one sounds good :)

I bought myself a cheap battery radio about 6 years ago, and the batteries are still going strong!! In fact, despite neddy having a whale of a time repeatedly throwing it in his water bucket, it still hasn't given up the ghost (bar the tuning now being a bit dodgy). Providing you don't have them on too loud and are conscious of people around you, I don't see a problem. I have my iPod on me occasionally aswell for on the way to the fields or the odd schooling session.

I have no objection to people having music on quietly, but I am not a radio person in stable, car or home, and if I was I wouldn't inflict my taste on others, so would rather others had the same consideration.:)

Sorry.

Licensing though? Serious question as I love having background noise and used to regularly retune kiss FM to radio 4! Kiss is for cars, I need something more soothing when I am doing my horses.

Yes it's called a PRS licence and affects workplaces where music is heard by more than one person. A livery yard isn't your workplace obviously but it is someone's and it's up to the owner to ensure there is a licence for music played there

OTT I know but I have had to go through this for work, a licence for us was £180 and a whip round soon sorted it

I am sure there are hundreds of workplaces up and down the country without licences but we were worried that it would be us that was caught out!

The thing is, whose going to know ??
There must be thousands of radios played in public every day where nobody pays for a license

Ipod in Chilli's on great for mucking out on a Monday morning when you haven't quite recovered from the weekend. I do a very embarrassing dance to as I am oblivious to any by standers. I like to school or jump to spanish music and Santana don't ask me why

It doesn't make it right though ;)

I think the best thing would be to ask the YO and make sure they know you are playing music, it's then up to them as to whether they would like to take the risk!

My old yard had built in speakers in the indoor arena which was awesome as I could change CD/radiostation whilst riding according to what mode I was in! Moved yards now so I just use my iPod :)
