Does anyone know how to work out the beats per minute of a song?

I want to try dressage to music in the future, but for now just want to find some songs to play while i'm schooling that will fit in ok with her strides. i've tried counting drum beats but always seem to come up with some ridiculous number.

You need to find out what time signature the song is in, and then count the crotchet beats in the piece of music.
Not sure if that made any sense to you.
Do you have a particular song in mind, as I might beable to work it out for you?
