Hi. My boy has a pink nose so to prevent sunburn I have had him wearing a sun muzzle during the day and also been creaming it - to his disgust - twice a day with a) initially sun cream but he hated the smell b) sudocream c) very expensive sunblock and d) finally cows udder cream but alas his nose is covered in spots / scabs and looking worse for wear. Today he has about 20spots / scabs on him. I have taken the muzzle off today and not put any cream on. Can you help? What could these spots / marks be and any advice please? It seems I cant prevent one problem without encountering another!

Our horse dislikes the smell of suncream but we persisited & now he knows it's part of his routine. We use childrens very high factor on his nose & have had no problem.

Hi there
Sounds like he has a heat rash, or blisters from being burnt? despite my bestest efforts my boy also has a pink nosey and a heat rash

He must have rubbed off the sun block, and because it was raining I had not put his mesh fly/nose mask on. Anyway, he hates the smell too but I just persist, slap it on before he has chance to realise whats going on.
I use factor 50 baby sunblock for my horse and also for my toddler, from Tesco.

A horse on our yard had sunburn which sounds a bit like your boys. Her pink muzzle was so sore and scabby you couldn't even get the headcollar on.

She had to have the vet out who advised the sudocream had possibly made her sunburn worse.

She was sedated due to the pain and had the scabs gently washed off with dilute hibiscrub. She was given an anti-biotic & anti-inflammatary jabs and de-scabbed muzzle slathered in flamazine. After that she was on anti-biotics & anti-inflammatories in her feed and flamazine applied twice daily. She also had to be in out of the sunlight for a fortnight - out at nights.

It really did impove a lot very quickly. Now she has kids factor 50 on twice daily.

I have a fly mask with a nose cover on it for my pinknosed one! after doing the suncream option for a while and finding she'd rubbed it off as soon as I turned my back, this was the only option! She has hers on in the morning and off at night. when I was creaming children's high factor suncream was the best - all the other types seemed to irritate her.

interesting about the cortisone thanks for that. thanks everyone, will cut down on the sudocream too. will just hope its a bit of sunburn and nothing else - can it go cancerous though? tempted to do the idea of bringin him in durind the day but now he is snug as a bug in his rug he is so much happier out...........the trials and tribulations! x

hi i checked his nose tonight and took pics, will upload asap, did all of the above (upsetting him hugely in the process) and noticed that the muzzle has a look about it of either dirty cream still on it (tried to wash as much off as poss) or puss like spots. I have left muzzle off and naked of any creams, hoping the rain will ease it a bit. will keep you posted but if youve any other thoughts? one side is scabby like as i said earlier, one side is clear, the front is yukky.
