Hi

Is it fair to have a muzzle on my pony for the majority of the time, I'm hoping to start leaving my horses out most of the time bringing them in at one in the afternoon to have hay in the stable and then ride and turn back out muzzled at around seven in the evening is this long enough to have the muzzle off? I cant really have her in the field without it as i cant catch her!
 
You can put a headcollar on her, for when she doesn't have a muzzle, you shouldn't keep a muzzle on just because it makes it easier to catch.
 
I've tried that, she does need a muzzle as she is a really quite big, trouble is she knows every trick in the book, it once took someone four hours to catch her, i couldnt catch her for a week once, sometimes you have to use a lunge line and herd her into a corner, but there isnt always someone around to help me. So do you think its mean to leave it on for that amount of time she does need it as well as catching issues she is fat too, sorry i didnt really explain that
 
If your pony needs a muzzle on then yes it is fair. Just make sure her face doesnt get rubbed and sore and be sure she has worked out how to drink whilst wearing it. She will find enough grazing to keep her going especially with her coming in for the afternoon hay.

Better to muzzle than to risk laminitis or colic.
 
Ok I just feel so mean shes had one on before but only during the day i've bough a comfort one and i'm going to put plenty of gamgee on to pad it, i just feel such a meany i dont really like them to be honest! But as you say its alot meaner to let her get really fat and risk laminitis
 
My mare was much happier with a muzzle on in the field with her mates than in a starvation paddock or stable by herself. You're not being mean if it prevents her getting laminitis.
 
so you'd rather not leave her out minus the muzzle incase you can't catch her to put it back on.. That's fair enough and reason enough to leave it on her. Better to do that than risk lami.
 
Thats the whole problem to be honest i cant blame her, stay out and stuff her face or be caught and not be able to eat properly cant say its much of a choice for me lol!
