Hello, I would appreciate suggestions for muzzles for a Houdini mare, unfortunately newly diagnosed with EMS. Currently she is in overnight on soaked hay and out in the day on about 4 acres. The grass is not terribly rich and is actually maintaining her weight at the moment, but the vet suggested she ought to be muzzled in order to actually lose weight, which of course she really needs to do.
However in the past she has removed every muzzle I have tried (hence why not using one currently) - either she scratches an ear on one foreleg so the strap behind her ears is pulled forwards whereupon she shakes it off, or hooks it off on the side of the field shelter.

Does she have enough mane to plait it over the headstrap? You just take mane/forelock from both sides of the strap and do a simple plait over the top of it secured with bands. Usually helps stop those that get it off over their heads.

The only one my fell pony will tolerate is the thinline flexible filly. He gets every other one off, where he doesn’t try with this one. Long may it continue!

Or you find it dangling from their head while they stuff themselves ?

I've got an overweight Houdini too. The others are all a nice weight so I can't drop the hay amount but I swear she waits until I've gone to work and then removes it pronto

Yeah it doesn't work for ones that get the bucket off first as opposed to the head strap!

I have that problem too. Flexible filly is better tolerated and do the plait and put a fly mask on tightly over the top.

The Ultimate Muzzle comes up very high on the nose, so that plus a plait in the mane stops mine getting it off
