Hi all,

After a bit of advice around muzzles

Sadly it is time I got Ralph the beagle a muzzle, he has ended up 3 times in the vets for eating things he shouldn’t on walks. Even on lead he scavenges for everything.

He knows the leave it command but if he really wants something he will get it.

Some have gaps for taking treats so id go for a full guard as you don’t want him picking up bits
My best advice would be to go to a pet shop and try a few on
They are never the size you think they will be

Thank you that is a good idea. I will take him tomorrow.

Currently waiting in the vets waiting room as he hasn’t eaten a bag of someone’s poop including the bag. The vet nurses have taken him out the back to be sick

Whilst you are at the vets, ask to try on the different muzzles they have. Mine was more than willing to send a vet nurse out with a selection to see what fitted best.

Vets often carry a stock of muzzles and even if they dont sell them will often have muzzles for their own use so trying for size may be avaliable.
The muzzles moobli has suggested are very good, long lasting, plenty of panting room too.

Had to leave him at the vets as it turns out the human poop he ate was also full of cannabis. They said he brought up quite a lot but was trembling and very unsteady on his legs. They are keeping him overnight for close monitoring and he is having iv drips and charcoal.

Very expensive walk!

Thank god I took him in early. He was fine on rest of walk. But within 10 mins of us being home he was swaying and leaning on the cabinet to keep himself up right and then he fell on his side so got him straight in the car and to the vets.

Vets have just text me that he has responded well to fluids and is more settled but will still be closely monitored throughout the night.

I used these muzzles on myLurcher. Lightweight easy to put on and cheap. Worth spending a bit of time making putting it on a positive experience. I put bits of chicken in the muzzle for a few days before fastening. Always reward for having it on. Hope it helps.

Ralph is now home and has made a full recovery. Vets tried on some muzzles for size and also recommended the baskerville which is what they tried on him

OMG Ralph! Glad he's on the mend.

We would always say stick some Primula, pate or dog friendly peanut butter on the inside to aid muzzle training, build it up for a while/make it super positive so that he's eager to stick his head in before using it on a walk.

Thank you, I have started today and poking small bits of cooked chicken through the gap when he puts his nose in. Will do it again later and then tomorrow will add some doggy peanut butter in and fasten it for a minute and keep repeating
