hi im new to all this heres my story...i recently got back into horses and i decided to buy myself 1, to cut a long story short i ended up with 2 fillies both half sisters they are lovely little fillies the bay is called poppy she currently stands at around 13.2hh she was 2 on the 1st of april and serena the chesnut stands at around 13hh and is 2 on the 9th of june, iv started to feed them hard food which they havent had before coming to me id like to know if they do need hard food atm, and what age will they stop growing and roughly how big they will be at maturity im loving my new additions and want to get things right so any help and advise would be greatly aprieciated thanks :D

Welcome.:)

What type of horse are they? That will effect what age they stop growing. Also depending on type of field etc you have them in as to whether they need hard food.

Have you any pictures of them?

they shouldnt need hard feed atm as long as they have access to hay or on spring grass, they will probably stop growing around 4ish and start to filll out do you have any pics of them they sound lovely

THIS IS POPPY

they are lovely they dont look like they need hard feed at all if grass runs low put them some hay out they will be fine

so should i stop the hard feed completely and just replace with hay in the feild? i noticed poppy becomes more agressive to serena at feed time is this due to the feed?

good i was hoping you would say that thats just the right size for me i dont want anything too big, i plan on braking them myself gradually so il be asking for any help and advise as i want to do it right

at their age i would just say give them variety and make sure they are really well handled they will be so much easier to break in if they are used to pretty much it all anyway good luck with them and have fun

at what age should i back them?

I have commented on your other thread, but just in case you haven't seen it. If you are having to ask all these questions please get help from someone that can see them and get to know them who is experianced with young horses. There are so many ifs and buts all the time with everything.

For example hard feed if previous living conditions were good and they have no health problems then no they don't need it and grass/hay will be fine. Although it won't always have necessary vits and mins to allow them to grow and develop. Go and talk to a feed merchant or phone up some of the feed companies.

With backing and breaking again depends, Breed, mentality/maturity, condition of horses, and the list goes on. I would seriously suggest you don't do it on your own, find someone through word of mouth who is experianced with youngsters either for horses to go to them or for them to come to you.

There is so much that can go so wrong and this can happen quickly and easily. Then it makes it harder to get right. (even with just handling) I have seen it so many times.

Feel free to PM me with any questions.

They both look lovely, good luck :)
