Seeing as my event season seems to have come to a premature end, and I am a little bored (please humour me!) I thougt I would give you guys a season round up. There have certainly been some very high highs, and some very low lows!!!!!!

The year didn't start well, by the middle on January I had fallen off 4 horses, and was to be found in A&E with bad concussion and a sprained ankle. 2 weeks later with ankle still huge and in agony I did the JAS at Bishop Burpton. Jem coming 4th in the BE90 class.

And Murphy got the winning score in the Novice (unfortunately we were HC!), and came 4th in the Open. Both qualified for the finals.

With my ankle still not right I ended up back in A&E, where they found a 2 week old fracture they had missed ont he original x-rays. The break was too old to do anything with, and did seem to be healing OK, so just told me to put a support on it, and rest it!!!

Not alot happened in Feburary, I took Jem and Murphy along to a 2 day clinc with Ken Clawson, and went to Somerford Park XC schooling

Febuary was mainly a month to try get my ankle sorted before the events started!!!!

March came, and the event season was upon me. Both horses starting at Oasby. Disaster struck the day before when Murphy came in from the field lame, with a nasty kick just above his knee. With Murphy now on box rest, all my hopes lay on Jem in the BE90. A double clear following a distinctly average dressage left us in 6th place, adding another FP to her tally from the previous year, and winning our first rosette of the season (for a ODE!).

With Jem's first BE100 of the season looming, and SJ being a definate weak link I then took he to the BE Jump Training at Bishop Burton. I was chuffed to bits with her, just having an unfortunate rail in the second round. Typically I finished 3rd, with the top 2 qualifying for the final!

Draycott at the end of March arrived, and Murphy was still off games following his kick, and having just sent off Jem's Badminton Grassroots entry I was after a good BE100 run for Jem. She didn't disappoint. A decent dressage and a double clear (her first at BE100) with a couple of XC time penalties meant we finished 4th, another rosette, and 10FP's to add.

Into April, Murphy began to come back into work, and Jem was in her final preparations for Badminton. This meant we dropped back to BE90 at Eden Valley to give her an easy run. It didn't go quite to plan when I arrived and found it was a complete bog. Did a horrific dressage (Jem is not a bog pony!) but then a clear SJ (on a surface) before withdrawing before XC. With Badminton less than 10 days away I was not going to risk running her in that ground!

Before I knew it Badminton was upon me.

Jem did a fab dressage test, unfortuntely one of the judges didn't agree, so we got 35.5 leving us quite well down the order. Onto the SJ, with clear rounds at our earlier events I was confident we could pull another out of the bag. Unfortunately it was not to be when we knocked down an innocuous (sp?) upright, which was apity as she was jumping well.

Onto the XC. It was immense, I think one of the best moments of my life! Jem sailed round making it feel so easy, very comfortably inside the time.

So we didn't trouble the leader board, but it was an amazing experiance.

Back home, and with Jem having a week off mid season holiday it was time to start getting Murphy ready for his first event back after his kick, the ON at Bradwall. We managed a good dressage, and a double clear, but I ran him slowly XC as he wasn't super fit hence we got quite a few time penalties.

IMG_3097.jpg

We still finished 10th however, and another rosette to add to the collection!

Into May and Jem moved back up to BE100 at Richmond, and after a not so brilliant dressage, managed another double clear, and finished 9th, 2 more FP's and another rosette.

Murphy was then at Chatsworth running in the ON. I have to say Chatsworth has always been my favourite event, so was looking forwards to it, determined to do well. Murphy didn't disappoint, despite me doing my best to sabotage it by forgetting my dressage test half way through!!! A double clear followed, this time inside the time, and we finished 4th. I was pleased to note that aswell as being a fabulous event the prizes are also good!!!

IMG_3199.jpg

The end of May meant mine and Murphy's 3rd attempt at an Intermediate (the other 2 I didn't complete!), and Jem carrying on her BE100 campaigne (sp?) at Bishop Burton. Murphy did me proud with a decent dressage, 1 down SJ and then a clear XC with not too many time penalties. We ended up 8th with 2 more BE points for Murphy's record, and i'll admit to shedding a tear as it had taken us 2 years to get then Intermediate completion, so to be placed was beyond what I had ever hoped.

IMG_3563.jpg

Still on a high it was jem's turn. An OK dressage, and double clear inside the time left us 5th, and 8 more FP's. A good day at the office!!!!!

IMG_3774.jpg

So into June, and Jem was running at Skipton. The SJ and XC caused carnage, so despite out 38 dressage we still finished 4th with our double clear. 10 FP's and a likit to add to the prize fund.

The end of June brought a vety soggy and muddy event at Cumwhinton. Jem did a poor dressage and had the last 2 fences down SJ after jumping a good round up to that point, a clear XC pulled us up to 14th, but disappointing after her recent form. Cumwhinton was also Murphy's first event back after his Intermediate the month before, as it had been a while I entered him for the ON to have an easy run, before Aske Intermediate the week after. His dressage was good, and a clear SJ (allbeit a little lacklustre, which I put down to the ground), meant we were in the top 3 going into XC. For some Reason Murphy never got into the XC and didn't seem to be enjoying himself. He stopped at fence 5 twice, which was so unlike him I called it a day and took him home. At home Murphy seemed fine, so I took him to Somerford for an XC school, and he was fab, back to normal Murphy, so assuming it was the ground and just an unfortunate blip we headed into July and to Aske for the Intermediate (and jem was doing the 100).

Murphy's dressage was reasonable, by the time we were SJ it was boiling hot. Murphy again felt a little lacklustre SJ, he only had 1 down, but it was hard work, and I could tell he wasn't feeling 100%. I withdrew before XC. Hoping for a better time we Jem I was thrilled with a double clear, and a good dressage, reckoning we would be 2nd I was chuffed to bits, until I saw I had got 13 TF time pens. I was so gutted, and it pushed me out of the placings.

Continued to next post.............

...........continued

Jem's next run was at Thornton Watlass, lost a shoe in the dressage, so we didn't get a very good score and an annoying pole down SJ, followed by a clear XC this time with 5.6 TP for going too slow! We still finished 7th as the XC caused alot of problems.

In a last ditch attempt to see what was up with Murphy we took him to Cholmondley to do the ON, he was feeling fine at home, so went with the aim of just having a nice time, and not putting ourselves under any pressure. I remember arriving at the event, and then the next think I knew I was in an ambulance! Apparently Murphy had gone ballistic as I got on for my dressage (nothing he has ever done before or since) and chucked me on the floor knocking me out. Another trip to A&E with concussion.

Into August and Murphy went straight off to the vets to see why he was acting so out of character, they found he had DJD in his hocks and hind fetlocks, he had them medicated, and the vets were happy he would return to his previous form. At this time I also made a last minute descision to go to University, after looking at my life so far I realised I had not got anywhere in the last 2 years, and a change was needed. With this in mind I decided that once Murphy was back in action I would put him up for sale. I thought I would look into getting a youngster to run alongside Jem next year, out of the blue along came Harry, earlier than anticipated, but he was everything I was looking for, as too good a chance to pass up.

IMG_5376.jpg

My next event with Jem was Beckwithshaw, an OK dressage, and a pole down SJ meant we finished 11th, after a clear XC round. This was followed up by Richmond, again an OK dressage, but a double clear meant we finished 5th, and another 8FP's for the tally.

By now I seriously debating weather to take Jem Novice, but I also didn't want to rattle her before her BE100 RF as it was to be my last chance (for atleast 10 years!) to qualifly for Badminton. I picked out a hard BE100 with the idea I would see how she felt round it, and if she found it easy think of moving her up.

So September came. Murphy was back in action and back to his old self, so up went his advert. Jem was entered for Allerton a good beefy Ian Stark course to see if she was ready for Novice, and Harry wos going from strength to strength, having been XC round a BE track, and done some dressage and SJ, I was tentitively planning his first event. Whilst working Harry in the field at home we then had a unfortunate incident. He had a nappy moment (which is his one little quirk), threw his head up, and somehow it collided with my cheek. Alot of blood and pain meant my third trip to A&E of the year. X-rays revealed a broken jaw which had displaced. Surgery followed to re-align my jaw using screws and elastic bands, and here I am now. No solid food, and no riding for 6 weeks. I start uni next week, and I am going to look like the special needs kid as I can't talk properly, and my face is swollen (i'm hoping it will have gone down a little!). So an early end to my eventing season, no RF for me, and Jem will not be going Novice this season. Harry will have to wait until next season to get going aswell, and Murphy's sale is being slightly hampered by the fact his rider is broken! Oh well, that's horses for you I guess!!!!

So all in all a complete rollercoaster ride! Sorry for the ramble, I have a fair bit of time on my hands, but can offer soup if anybody wants any!!!!!

You've achieved so much this year! Good round up and thanks for posting. I love all of the pics! What will you do with your three when you are off at uni? Are you planning to keep Jem now, I know you were considering selling her?

Wow what a busy year! Plenty of ups and downs. Next year will be excititng with Jem doing Novice and Harry competing as well. Well done and good luck for next year :)
And get well soon!

Well done cramming a whole year into those posts - my normal comp reports are that long! Sounds like an eventful and exciting year you've had with some nice horses. Good Luck at Uni - I did the same and kept my horses, it's a hard slog but worth it!

Congratulations on a successful season and commiserations on all the A&E trips! Really enjoyed your report, best of luck for next season :)

Ouch! Sounds like a very successful year all the same though.

Out of interest, what are you going to do at uni-are you taking the neds with you?

Was thinking about you yesterday - my horse raised her head up and nearly caught me and all sorts of visions started racing through my head! Have you managed to find food that you can eat.

Fab pics - I love reading your reports! Hope you are not in too much pain and get better soon. x

I hadn't realised it was the new one that had done your jaw!! :o oouch.

Read all of that, a bitter sweet year - Jem is absolutely gorgeous!! And love Murphy's pics and the new one is a really nice colour :)

How is the jaw feeling? And where/what r u doing at uni?

Great report, thank you.

2011 has been our first season and we also changed from pony to horse. So far, we've gained a single FP but are still hunting that elusive frilly - very envious of all yours!!

When you go to university, how do you plan to keep the horses fit? Just interested as we'll be in this situation in around 3 years time.

Great pics, get well soon,

FP

Great report and some lovely photos of Murphy, he really is a dude. Hope your jaw soon mends, but at least you only need to drink alcohol for the first two weeks at Uni anyway (I'm sure that's what my boys did?)

If he doesn't sell, pop him in an envelope to me along with that lovely tack he's got, I promise to send the £1 by return post.

JDx

Thanks for all the jaw healing vibes!!!

Decided to keep Jem when I realised how much I would miss her, and what a fab horse she is. She does everything and anything no questions asked, and is quiet enough for my Mum to compete at Dressage.

I'm off to do an Equine Sports Performance degree. The degree will be from Leeds Uni, but I will be studying at Bishop Burton. This means I will commute from home (home is the yard!) everyday. It will mean early starts and late finishes to do the horses as well, and I also want to keep up teaching my favourite clients (and riding my favourite horses!). Mum will be around aswell as she doesn't work many hours now, so she is planning to take over Jem this winter and do Dressage with her. She has just found a fab new dressage trainer, so she is really going to get going with her competing. At this rate i'll be getting her BD membership for Christmas!!!!! I'll have to ride Harry either before or after uni, but we do have a great big light on the outside of the stable yard, which shines into most of the arena, not good enough light to jump, but can do flat and lunge. Fingers crossed Murphy will have found a lovely new home (got a few people interested) by the time winter hits.

It sounds like a great year, in between the hospital visits! Do they know you by name now?
Sucks about starting uni with a wired jaw, but just to make you feel better, in my first year, 2nd week of living in halls there was a fire alarm drill at about 7am and course I was last one out as I ran back to get keys (to get back in :p). So with all the students out of their halls and gathered around the courtyard (where our block faced) I ran outside, tripped over my front foot, knocked myself out and basically had a fight with the gravel.

Nice little visit to hospital via ambulance (not that I remember) but 8 stitches around my eye and a broken foot resulted from my own clumsiness. :o

Ps. How did the review on your jaw go?

Quite an eventful year! But some fantastic results and glad to hear you have decided to keep Jem, looking forward to reading about her Novice debut and Haribo's BE debut :).

I forgot to add the other day that a friend ate quite a bit of raw cake mixture (not sure how she managed with the raw egg bit though!) when she had jaw surgery, so perhaps another idea to add to your list. Fingers crossed for you tomorrow, was wondering how it had gone too.

Loved your report and hope that your jaw heals fast - you have a wonderful team of horses which sound like they will go far.

Have a wonderful time at Uni - its a memorable part of your life - still remember a lot of my college years. Pity I can't remember what I had for breakfast :D
