im so devastated my 3 yr olds' done a check ligament.. it's not too major but he's yet to be scanned... was meant to be jumping 4yr olds this season... he was put out this week as a treat for coming along so well...

what are your expierences with ligament injuries?? how long did your horses have off and does anyone know if the horse makes a full recovery- i no it depends on circumstances etc but generally???

the vet i went to didnt seem particularly experienced(not usual vet). he even mentioned turn out, but said he advises a 'small field'!!!!

but he's being box rested, cold hosing 3 times a day for 20 mins each a and has bandages on in the day and vet wrap at night,,, anything else i can do- also on bute..........
 
It needs to be scanned so you know how bad the damage is, but im afraid there isnt anything you can do apart from box rest and then a programme coming slowly back into work when ready but you need to know how bad the damage is for you to know any sort of time span

My boy did his check lig beginning Dec 07, he has been stabled at night and potters round the yard during the day as he goes nuts if in all day. He has had 6 weeks of ultrasound physio and last week had his 10 week scan to moniter its healing. Unfortunately the vet found some damage to his suspensory (PSD) so we will rescan in 3 weeks so we can decide if shockwave will be of benefit

The original plan was to begin walking in hand on a hard surface- ideally on a walker- progressing to limited turnout and a gradual return to work
 
We had one who had damage to a check ligament. What we didn't realise was that the initial scan a few days after injury was too soon to show the full extent of the damage so you need to leave at least a week - 10 days.

That said, we gave her 20 months off to have a foal and she has come straight back to jumping at top level. It's the most frustrating thing, but time and controled walking and exercise will be the healer. Good luck.
 
Yep my boy did his check lig, infact managed to put a 2cm hole in it!? (In his stable somehow?)
He was box rested, then hacked everyday gradually getting longer. Then more work built up from there, fairly slow process.
His was injected with something to speed up the healing. This seemed to work as after second scan hole was barely visable on scanner.
He is know back to his old self, jumping 1.20+ again like before.

Poor you, you will know more once it is scanned. A horse I know took 6 months to get back to cantering circles etc but depends on how badly it is damaged and I agree that a good recovery is more than possible.
