I have posted about Beauty alot, so I though you would like to see some pictures. I know she is very thin and has dirty legs. The thiness, she had a bad winter with mites and the legs. Well trying to keep them clean would be like using a paper umberella - Pointless :p

Aww bless her, there is a 32yr old ex racer on the yard i have mine on and i'd say she's just as thin. She is just picking up now i'd say. It is a battle to keep her weight on but then she still legs it round the field giving my 2yr old a run for his money :) Best of luck with her..x

Shes a grand old lady, does she still have plenty of teeth? Theres a pony on our yard whos 34 and looks really well tho has hardly any teeth left now. Shes fed a very wide menu by her owner to keep her weight on - costs her a fortune! How long have you owned her? She looks happy enough.

Bless, hope my old boy is still looking like that at 39. She is a bit skinny but to reach 39 and still look pretty healthy is an achievement in itself. Where I used to work we had a 45 year old highland and he looked like that :)

I've been loaning her for the past few weeks. She had about 4 teeth at the front and I don't know about the back. Dentist is coming next week anyway. She is fed a sort of horse mix that her owner buys, along with various old age and joint supplements. I am looking into putting her on mash to help her gain weight

Mash is what lady on our yard feeds her pensioner along with veteran chop several times a day. She also has Badminton grass but she cant eat hay as doesnt have the teeth to chew it. She also feeds grass nuts soaked into a pulp. Hope that gives you a few ideas.

I've been loaning her for the past few weeks.

As someone who also owns a veteran - I am a bit ashamed to call him that as he is at 23 obviously a spring chicken compaired to yours - to see a comment such as this is incredibly refreshing.

She is obviously well cared for - well done you:D

My TBx mare is 37, has all her teeth & is a little fatter than yours, but not by much.

She is still full of herself, kicks the gate for food etc, & while she's cheerful, I am happy to keep her. She's on pergolide and eats as much as my big horses.

Ah bless her. My old boy died last year at the age of 38 and he was the spitting image of your little mare. I found Baileys no.1 which looks like dried breadcrumbs and good old vegetable oil combined with sugarbeet was very good for helping him condition wise and you could soak the whole lot into a mash so that he could eat even though he had very few teeth! He used to have Blue Chip as well to provide a good vitamin and mineral balance. His legs gave up on him in the end but he looked pretty good condsidering his age. :)

Its lovely to hear of someone taking on an oldie, well done.

I have to work pretty hard at keeping weight on my oldie (34) not that you would notice as he generally has plenty of weight on.

I use nuts, chop, soaked sugar beet and supplements in addition to grass and haylage normally.

If I think he is starting to loose weight I put him on Blue Chip and cooked barley. Its a bit of a pain boiling pans of barley everyday but it turns into a lovely mush and works better than anything else I have tried.

And straight barley is very very cheap too

omg bless her - and y0u for keeping her so happy - if my horse lives to that age ill be 80 and well happy!!!!!
god bless you both xxxx:)

At the moment she is having trouble chwing her haylage, But she loves her grass and its getting pretty low in the mares field. So we go for walks so she can pick at it and cause I ride my bike there I pick the long grass on my way up

How lovely. I took on a 25 yo retired mare two months ago as companion to my other horse when I had to have my gelding pts age 22 from a broken leg. He was my horse of a lifetime but already I love my new old lady and would dearly miss her. She too struggles with weight, think she was out all last winter rugless so am desperately trying to get her some condition on. I hope she looks as good as your mare when she is the same age ! I know everyone thought I was nuts to take on an oldie, but she is her own little person. You have done a wonderful thing to take her, enjoy every moment you have together.

we have a wee old mare at our yard, her owner is one of my closest friends, quela is 33 or 32, but she is lovely tbh she is in better condition than half of the horses on the yard she is spot on, only has about six teeth left and is currently living out on her own in a paddock with lots of grass and getting two big feeds a day, if she doesnt get fed before half ten for brekkie usually i fed her in the morning i get screamed at! by her obviously, she gets fed conditioning mix, sugarbeet, pony nuts and garlic and fifteen plus supplement :D

Our 26 yr loan also suffers with weight and mites in winter. He is fed fast fibre as an extra to his normal feed in winter as his teeth prevent him eating much hay. It comes in cubes and is soaked to a consistency like a bran mash, he just has a bowl of it twice a day next to his feed.
She looks a real honey, thats some age! Bless her. :D

She looks really good for her age and very well :) ... makes my 29 year old seem like a teenager and I hope he lives as long your your lady :)

I seem to have kept his mites at bay by using Switch ..... would not have believed it, if I had not seen the results, so worth a try :)

Ah bless her of course shes going to be thin but she stil looks good for her age.
Id recommend alpha beet for weight iv always used it for my horses who arnt great with there weight and its worked wonders :)
